My quilts are machine washable, as long as you take them out of the washer as soon as the washer stops, wet fabric tends to run quicker. I advise buying what the grocery stores call color catchers, I put one or two in the washer when I wash a quilt especially with a darker color such as red, the fabrics that I assume will run more have been pre-washed, although keep in mind a fabric that runs once or twice will probably run again...that's why I tend to use a color catcher each time.
As a general rule of thumb, wash your quilt in cold water. This helps to reduce the fading of color. Also the quilts should be hung to dry not dried in the dryer, although to fluff on a cool setting for a bit won't hurt them.
